A REAL Master Bath Remodel

Don't you just love my recently renovated bathroom above?
Oh, you don't think that's really my bathroom? Possibly because I've mentioned before my apartment is maybe 500sqft?
Ok. You caught me. That's actually my parent's recently remodeled master bathroom.
And yes, they did it for under $5,000.00.
Which, by the way, my dad considered over budget.
This is where my cheapness comes from.

Today, you lucky ducks you, I'm going to share pictures of the remodel!
And if you ask enough questions, I'll make my mom come on here to answer them all for you!
If she wasn't so technologically challenged, I would set her up with her own blog, she's a great writer and has lots of blog worthy happenings in her world.

Now, as some background, our house was built in 1988, we moved in in 1994.
The flooring in the living room and kitchen/dining room has been changed twice, the kitchen was first redone in 2008-2009 with granite counter tops and refinishing the cabinets; then they decided to put in hardwood floors in 2011, so the cabinets were then painted white(oak cabinets and dark wood floors do not go together!).
The house has been painted twice, my bathroom(it's an only child thing ;) was redone in 2010, hardwood flooring was put in throughout the house in fall/winter of 2011 and in 2012 my parent's decided it was finally time to finish off the very last room in the house and redo their bathroom!

Now, won't you take a stroll with me through the late 80's?

Ahh...the gold finishes. Classic.

They tore it out before you could see, but there was carpet here in the vanity area and tile in front of the shower.

Welcome back to 2013!
Now let's see the fun part, the demo!

I personally like the capturing of the dust motes flying around.

Prime those cabinets!

I know I know...dragging this out with a million pictures, but I saved the best for last!
Duh, it's a remodel post, if I showed it in reverse you wouldn't stick around! haha!

My dad tiled all that. BOOM.

He built this cabinet and the mirror frames too.

Okay so here's what you can't see(my mom needs a lesson in blog picture taking) the open space between the sinks(below) is now a laundry hamper, which my dad built.
My dad is an amazing carpenter and worked for over 30 years in a carpenter's union in Southern California.
He can build anything! Seriously. My mom hands him like half a sketch and he makes it happen.

Now, you're like, how did they do that for less than $5,000.00?
Well... they got that granite counter off Craigslist and then just had it cut down to fit.
The tile was all on sale(wall and flooring).
Paint is relatively cheap.
My dad did all the demo himself.
He did all the tiling, which anyone can do, tiling is actually pretty easy!
And the rest was labor on my mom and dad's part! Paint and time people, paint and time.
They bought and installed  two doors. One pocket door at the entrance and the closet door.
The pretty chandelier and the light fixtures over the sinks, I think are from Overstock? I know the chandelier is from a Martha Stewart line!

Got any questions? Want more pictures? I'll forward them on to my parents and get you some real answers.

  3. Mallory's Mom here!I am techno challenged, but I have mastered posting comments, so here goes.
I'm so happy to see that Mallory wrote a blog about this bathroom! It is the last room we have to remodel in this house, and was the 2nd best design, next to the kitchen, as far as I'm concerned. However, it was the dirtiest, heaviest and nastiest project to date!!
First, let me say that I don't consider our ways of remodeling on a budget as "cheap". I'd rather think that we are "designing with deals". Now my husband always wants to do designs on the snallest budget, but he never really gives me a dollar amount of what that figure is, so my goal is to create what I want, and then we hunt down the best possible prices we can find.
This bathroom required a lot of hunting, as bathroom fixtures have so many styles and the prices vary greatly!!
The actual bathroom design started with the granite slab which was 9'L X 30" W for $75.00! Can you say SCREAMING DEAL??
We kept the existing mirror and then built the cabinet to cover the center section, and built the frames to make the sink areas have separation.
We had a bit of a tussle over the glass door going into the closet, because I wanted one and he wanted to re-use the old 6 panel solid one. Same day as the tussle, he finds the PERFECT door @ Home Depot for $24.00! Can you say SCREAMING DEAL PART 2??
The biggest headache of the job was the paint color we used for the cabinets/counters. It started out as a color called "Clocktower", but once I started to work with it, it was too much of an Army green for me, so we went back to Lowes and I added 10 shots of black to darken it to the color I wanted.
My husband didn't like the cost of the marble we used for the floors and shower, both are the same material, the shower is subway size and the floor is 12X12, but I wanted the spa-like WOW factor and you can't get that with ceramic tiles!
Etsy was my source for the glass knobs and the Art Deco towel hooks.
Finally we get to Ebay, which I love for so many reasons! We found the rectangular sinks, the sink and shower fixtures and the lights above the sinks/toilet.
I must correct an error Mallory made in her blog though. The chandelier DID NOT come from Martha Stewart!!!! It is a 1940's Baccarat chandelier that my husband found on Ebay or $185.00!!! Can you say THIRD WONDERFUL SCREAMING DEAL??? When we move, that baby is going with us! LOVE LOVE LOVE that fixture!!
Thanks Mal for sharing our project with your bloggers!! XXOO

  9. You remodeled your bathroom less than $5,000? OMG! This is so unbelievable! Even with a budget, you managed to make your new bathroom beautiful and have everything that you need. Actually, on the top of my list is a his and hers sink. My wife uses a lot of products and everything is cramped in one place. Having a his and hers sink would be my gift to her (and for myself, as well. Haha!).
